Fungal infections of the toenails can be a persistent and at times embarrassing problem. If they are left untreated they can become painful. The infections develop when the type of fungi known as dermatophytes burrow under the nails making them crusty, discoloured, thick and distorted.
The first sign of toenail fungus is a yellow or white spot appearing underneath the tip of the nail. The spot then thickens and causes distortion to the nail as the infection progresses. Then crusting, darkening and discolouration begin as fungi progress under and into the nail.
A toenail fungal infection can be picked through walking barefoot in a gym locker room or shower, at a swimming pool or even when you have a pedicure in a less-than-sanitary place. People with diabetes, a history of athlete’s foot or who are prone to excessive perspiration are more susceptible to the fungi.
Let us now have a look at some of the remedies to the toenail fungal infections. If the condition continues to spread further or is painful, then consult your doctor.
Tea tree oil
This is a natural fungicide and also has some antiseptic qualities. Tea tree oil is made from leaves of the tea tree. Although it is natural, tea tree oil can be quite potent and should therefore never be ingested. After applying to the infected toenails, you are certain to see an improvement in your nails over a few months.
Vinegar is also known to have some antifungal properties although its acidity is quite mild and may not be strong enough to kill already established fungus. The mild acidity is likely to prevent fungus infections though.
Vicks VapoRub has a combination of several ingredients that have antifungal properties. A lot of people have reported success with using it to clear fungal infections but in almost all the cases you have to catch the infection in its early stages. The only downside with VapoRub is that the petroleum jelly that it has can trap moisture in or around your toenails, which might actually aid fungus growth!
In addition to killing germs and bacteria in the mouth, Listerine mouthwash can also be a remedy for toenail fungus. The mouthwash contains alcohol as well as several compounds that are an antiseptic strong enough to keep harmful bacteria and fungi away.
Baking soda and vinegar soak
Baking soda does not necessarily kill the fungus but it is fungistatic, which means it can stop fungus from growing and spreading. This is because of its alkalinity. You mix a cup of vinegar with enough water to soak your feet in. After soaking for 15 minutes, pat the feet dry with paper towels. Then add several tablespoons of baking soda to enough water and soak your feet in the water for 15 minutes. In essence the vinegar will kill the fungus while the baking soda will inhibit the growth of more fungus.
Zetaclear Topical Treatment
My final solution to the toenail fungus is a topical toenail fungus treatment called ZetaClear. This is a highly popular and effective method of getting rid of toenail fungus. I have written a complete review of this product here. You can read the full review or purchase this product directly by clicking here (aff. link).
Whichever treatment you choose, take note of the following precautions to prevent recurrences:
(a)Make sure your feet are always as clean and dry as possible
(b)Have waterproof sandals at public swimming pools or at other wet public areas
(c)Change your socks daily
(d)Always keep your toenails shorter than the toes’ tips
(e)Wear synthetic fabric socks that wicks moisture away from the feet.Tags: cure, toenail fungus
